Designer Tips – How to Choose the Right Bed Frame?
Finding the perfect bed is like finding a perfect partner, Agree? Of course! It’s the one place where you spend so much time relaxing. Selecting the right bed involves a blend of aesthetic appeal, practical functionality, and lasting comfort. Today, on the market, you can find bed frames for $200 to $10,000, and each offers its own features and uniqueness to the space.
In designing, we follow certain rules to find the perfect bed match. Today, I’ll simplify those principles for you on how to choose the perfect bed that aligns with both your needs and your interior design style before you break the bank.
Always measure the room to make sure the room is not occupied with this one piece of furniture or cornered out. Be conscious about it. Below is a quick reference for you.
Size of bed frame should allow extra foot print on all sides min 2′ – 3′ to add side tables and walk space.
Room size (Min. – Max) | Bedframe size (recommended) | Bed size |
12’ x 12 – 14’ x 12’ | 72” x 84” | California King |
10’ x 12’ – 13’ x 13’ | 76” x 80” | King |
10’ x 10 – 10’ x 14’ | 60” x 80” | Queen |
9.6’ x 10.6’ – 10’ x 12’ | 54” x 80” | Full XL |
9.6’ x 10.6’ – 10’ x 12’ | 54” x 75” | Full |
7’ x 10’ – 10’ x 10’ | 39” x 80” | Twin XL |
7’ x 10’ – 10’ x 10’ | 39” x 75” | Twin |
Don’t forget to measure the ceiling height, it helps you decide how high you can go with the headboard. For standard rooms 8′ tall, you can do max 54″ and for above 58″ to 70″
Material matters; a wide range of options is available whether you prefer Natural Wood, Engineered wood, Metal, Performance, or Upholstered fabric. Each has its own benefits: Natural wood offers warmth and longevity, Engineered wood offers durability, Metal is affordable, Performance or Upholstered, often padded, adds a soft, luxurious feel to your room.
Try out fabric swatches to see how they look with your home lighting and against other furniture/decor.
Functionality is often ignored but makes a difference. Sometimes I feel functionality challenges aesthetics and both wins. Storage bed is useful in small footprint rooms that need additional room for things. High cushioned or tufted headboard comforts you while reading, watching TV, and relaxing with extra softness on the back. In the kids’ bedrooms, I recommend choosing the right bed that grows with them rather than swapping every few years.
At Re-Treat home, I believe investing on pieces that can pass on generations are valuable and treasured.
Scale and Pattern: Are you wondering what it is? This is a secret component of achieving a designer look at how space can be perceived and experienced. These elements can alter the visual and emotional feel of a room and contribute to the overall balance and harmony of the interior. It can either make or break the aesthetic appeal of a room. To effectively use scale and pattern, you can refer to the pattern on the headboard as the focal point of the bedroom. This approach can transform a simple room into a thoughtfully curated environment.
Small Rooms – Choose small pattered prints, lighter or neutral colors and avoid solid and large patterns.
Medium Rooms – Experiment with medium scale pattern, avoid too many patterns to keep harmonious.
Large Rooms – Choose bold colors, mix patterns (small and large size) to make a statement
Design Style, not just selecting a bed frame. Any item that goes into the space changes the look and feel. So, while making any decisions, have a background thought of the overall design style and theme you’re going for and whether that fits. Sometimes, it happens to me as well. I like many decor and furniture pieces but don’t want to deviate from my path. Combining all should reflect your personality, cohesion, and overall balance. Your bed should harmonize with the existing room’s style and other furniture pieces. For instance, a sleek, minimalist bed frame fits well in a modern setting, while a more ornate wooden frame might suit a traditional room.
Regardless of the actual measurements, the goal is to achieve a visual balance. The Bed should neither dominate the space nor disappear into it. It should be proportional to other furniture pieces and the overall room size.
